Ideology

What is ideology in media?
Ideology is a set of beliefs a single person or group hold.
We share common values, judgements and beliefs depending on what culture we are part of.
Ideology is a system of meaning that helps us define the world and this system makes value judgements about the world.
Different genres of music all have different ideologies and this can have an affect on how people represent themselves.

Truths?
Here are some 'truths'/things I feel are natural and stereotypical about society;

  • A woman's place is in the home
  • It's natural that some people are rich and some people are poor
  • Education is important
  • Boys will be boys - they rough and tumble
  • Ignorance is bliss
  • The news is a window on the world
Norms
Ideology makes us normalise media texts. If we normalise something we accept it as behaviour(or values, beliefs, ideas and attitudes) and don't question this norm, however this may be problematic.

Representations
(Dictatorships, tyrants, 18th century views of Africans, Naziism)
The media represent images of social interaction and social institutions on a daily basis; because these ideologies are repeated, they shape broad social definitions.
I have discussed these questions in my music video textual analysis';

  • How are males and females represented?
  • Do they display a narrow rage of lifestyles and behaviours and marginalise others?
  • Do they make value judgements about what is normal and what is deviant?
