Types of music videos

  • Montage
  • Raunchy
  • Narrative(story)
  • Performance - band 'perform' the song
  • No lip sync or lip sync
  • Artist absent - the artist doesn't appear in the video
  • Random/weird - the video has nothing to do with the songs theme
  • Related to theme - the central idea of the song is represented - either literally or exaggerated
  • Hybrid performance + narrative - this is perhaps the most common, there is a story going on, intercut with the band performing
  • Intertextual - the video references a classic film/TV show
  • One take - the video is done in one take
  • Cartoon/animation - the band are replaced by digital or drawn representations
  • Humour
  • The extended video - the video goes way beyond the length of the song
  • Low budget - the video has low production values, either deliberately or of necessity
  • High budget - the video is very expensive and has high production values

Narrative and performance generally go together in pop music videos.
