Taylor Swift - Mine
The last music video I chose to analyse is one by Taylor Swift. She is a young female artist who I think Megan Linnell, the artist who's song we have chosen for our music video project, shares a lot of similarities with. I thought it made sense to deconstruct music videos by artists similar to ours because it will give me a lot of ideas to help make our music video successful.
Directed by: Taylor Swift and Roman White
TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
This video quite clearly tells a story from start to finish, it begins as Taylor is in a restaurant and the shot cuts between a couple on the next table arguing and a flash back of what must be her childhood of her parents arguing. We then see a cut to Taylor surrounded by photographs and lip syncing the beginning of the verse, whilst looking directly into the camera lens, including the audience. Next the director cuts back to the restaurant and uses close-ups on hers and the waiters face to show an eyeline match of them both staring into each others eyes, showing they have found an instant connection and chemistry for each other. The shot cuts back to Taylor surrounded by photos and we realise by listening to the lyrics of the song she is singing and close-ups of the photographs that they are all photos telling her life story.
The first chorus basically shows in video the exact lyrics of the song, they are on the beach, holding hands and the director is showing us that this is them falling for each other. The next verse and chorus show them moving in together, and throughout allow these shots the video continues to cut back to her lip syncing into the camera walking and looking at all of the photographs which are hanging individually all around her. There is a mid-shot of when he proposes to her in a boat on a lake and then the third verse shows them having a big argument where the lyrics suggest they are going to separate just as her parents did, but the camera shows a panning shot of her running out into the street and him following her, the lyrics then twist and we see a close-up of him holding her and telling her he'll never leave her.
The final part of the song is where the camera cuts between them getting married and having a family, this gives the happy ending feel that the song clearly suggests and the story ends with the director using a close-up of Taylor looking into the camera, surrounded by all of her photos which here, were blurred out, this editing technique was used often in this video and we may use this in our music video as I think it puts more emphasis on the main part of the shot.
I really liked this video, as I feel it tells the sort perfectly and I really want to make sure that like 'Mine', our music video keeps with the theme of the song and what it is true meaning is.
